Heidelberg 2008

Heidelberg, October 15-16 2008

The official launch of the IHMC was announced, following the signature of the letter of intent by leaders from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), part of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, and the European Commission (EC), officially agreeing to cooperate in their efforts and to release the data from the NIH Human Microbiome Project and the EC Metagenomics of the Human Intestinal Tract (MetaHIT) project.

The participants agreed that data generated by IHMC projects will be made available through the public databases at EBI and NCBI and analyses of those data will be available through the NIH Human Microbiome Project Data Analysis and Coordination Center, led by Owen White, University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore and an equivalent center at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), led by Peer Bork.

Data release principles were discussed and a summary document was drafted.

It was agreed that the IHMC chairmanship will rotate annually and that the co-chairs for 2009 are Christian Desaintes from the European Commission and S. Dusko Ehrlich, coordinator of the MetaHIT project.

A press opportunity was held (see press release).
